University Hospitals Birmingham

There is a huge array of research taking place at UHB and a number of active public involvement groups.

Patient and Public Involvement Forums (PPIF) exist at each of the 4 UHB sites (Good Hope Hospital, Heartlands Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Solihull Hospital).  The PPIFs consist of 15-20 staff members, patients, carers and the public to ensure all voices are heard in the development of each hospital. Although the PPIF primary aim is service improvement rather than research, the groups are happy to be invited to get involved in research too. Researchers can attend their monthly meetings or separate meetings can be arranged if necessary.

The Youth Voice Council (YVC) is one of the patient carer councils at UHB and exists to improve the care of 16-24 year old patients at UHB hospitals.  The group meets monthly and although its focus is service delivery, it can be contacted for research involvement purposes too.

The West Midlands Secure Data Environment (SDE) Data Access Committee is made up of members of the public from across the region who review applications from research teams to use health data stored in the SDE. They ensure that, whenever researchers are given access to data, it is to support research that is in the public’s interest.
