Anthony Hilton


Professor Anthony Hilton was appointed to the role of Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of the College of Health and Life Sciences at Aston University in 2021. 

Anthony gained a PhD in microbiology at the University of Birmingham and held the position of lecturer in the Institute of Public and Environmental Health for five years before joining Aston University in 2000, where he continues to pursue his research using molecular techniques to characterise and investigate the epidemiology of bacterial pathogens.

Anthony was appointed as senior lecturer and programme director of Biosciences in 2005 and promoted to Reader and Head of Department in 2009. He was also Deputy Dean of the School of Life & Health Sciences for three years.

He has served as honorary general secretary of the Society for Applied Microbiology, Trustee of the International Forum on Home Hygiene and held several journal editorial positions. He is a National Teaching Fellow, Fellow of the Royal Society for Biology and the Institute of Biomedical Science. Through his work with the media he is a regular contributor to print and broadcast articles in the field of popular microbiology and a passionate advocate for engaging non-science specialists and younger learners in microbiology.
