BHP Clinician Scientist
Are you a postdoctoral clinical professional looking to secure the next step in your clinical academic career?
Our Clinician Scientist posts offer you career development support to secure an intermediate Fellowship or equivalent comprehensive funding. Mentoring from a clinical lead within the College of Medicine and Health Fellowships Academy will enable you to develop and progress your career aspirations.
These Clinician Scientist posts are funded by the College of Medicine and Health at the University of Birmingham and our NHS partner trusts. This year we are delighted that a further post is being supported by The Eveson Trust.
We are currently not accepting applications for these posts – recruitment will re-open for next year in Autumn 2026.
This consultant-level post offers early career clinical academics a 50/50 split of academic and clinical time, within a 10 PA weekly job plan. In the role you would join a research group at the University of Birmingham and undertake your clinical work within a BHP member NHS trust.
The role is offered as a five-year fixed term contract. This includes a three-year probation period with annual joint appraisal. A review with the appointee in the third year will assess the individual’s future career trajectory and determine either their continuation as a University-based staff member or transition within the remaining contract to a full-time permanent NHS consultant position.
The scheme offers you extensive mentoring and career development support, to target fully funded, highly prestigious, external clinical fellowships such as the MRC Clinician Scientist, NIHR Advanced Fellowships or equivalent Wellcome schemes.
All postdoctoral healthcare professionals are welcome to apply for these posts. However, we particularly welcome medically-qualified applicants who are clinically active and who have recently completed specialist clinical training (or are about to).
Please complete the application form and upload your CV to the University of Birmingham jobs site by the deadline of Monday 19 January 2026.
